I am a Certified Nurse Midwife whose practice has been focused on women from ethnic minorities. I have attended over 1000 births. I chaired the Certified Nurse Midwifery certification examination for 5 years and implemented computer-based testing for this examination. As a graduate nursing educator, I initiated the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner program and the Doctor of Nursing Practice programs at TWU.  My education includes master's degrees in bioinformatics and medical-surgical nursing. My research interests relate to women's health, childbearing, maternal mortality, health promotion, informatics, and strategies to promote nursing student success. I have been the principal investigator or the co-principal investigator for several large HRSA grants related to graduate and undergraduates nursing students.

Current Projects

Our research team (Drs. Liu, Mancuso, Restrepo, and Hamilton) has received internal grant support to explore the significant maternal morbidity and mortality in Texas. We are currently analyzing late maternal death related to opioid abuse, homicide, and suicide. We have presented these findings in professional and public venues.

Our research team (Drs. Stankus, Mancuso, Hamner, and Stankey) is exploring the factors that relate to undergraduate nursing student success with the criterion for success being admission into the upper division nursing program. This includes first-time-in-college student demographic characteristics, academic factors, and subsequent course performance. This effort is supported through the HRSA Scholarships for Disadvantaged Student grant ($2,600,000/ years).

Our research team (Drs. Mancuso, Roussel, and Keele) is exploring the transition from the practice doctorate (Doctor of Nursing Practice) to the Ph.D. in Nursing Science, the research doctorate. We are examining the characteristics of those students with a practice doctorate who choose to pursue the research doctorate and their perceptions of how to facilitate alignment of curricula.
